Additive manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing, has evolved significantly since its origins in the 1980s, moving from rapid prototyping in aerospace and automotive to producing actual components for a range of industries, including medical components. Despite the common perception that AM is for one-offs, companies are now 3D metal printing for serial mass production.
